Dear Deb... Q. Dear Deb... I recently applied for a job at a local store and was denied employment. They told me that they had just hired two other people and had too many people that were new on the sales floor. Then about 1 or 2 days later my parents received a phone call from this store. They told him that I told them that I was Gay. Then, they told my dad that that is the reason that they did not hire me. I told no one and have since told no one there that I am gay. A friend told me to contact the HRC and let them know and that they might be able to tell me more of what to do. But I needed to hear advice about this from someone that is not at all involved before I talk to them. If you could please give me a little advice about what I need to do. Signed, Lost in Texas A. I don't see any harm in going to their website for help. Since you asked
me for advice I will try to help you sort things out. It seems to me that
someone knows that you are gay and might be undermining your employment.
Are you are trying to hide the fact that you're gay? If so, you may not be
doing such a great job at it. For example, I looked at your member profile
in AOL and I see that you list yourself as gay. Although it is not
"right" to deny employment based on this... ask yourself this...
