Yellow Submarine

Though the animated movie of the Beatles’ hit song "Yellow Submarine" is more a collection of music videos connected by a loosely structured plot than it is a fully realized movie, the good news is that most of the musical vignettes are well done, and some of them are actually quite good as stand-alone music videos.

The sometimes imaginative animation is also sometimes a bit dated, and the big, bad Blue Meanies attack on the good folk of Pepperland plot is minimal, but what makes "Yellow Submarine" work is the witty, pre-Monty Python silliness that made the on-screen Beatles so endearing. And, of course, there's the Beatles’ music. Some of their best songs are included here, re-mixed for a digital six-track theatrical sound format (DTS), available only on the DVD. "All You Need is Love," "Nowhere Man," "When I'm Sixty-four" and "Hey Bulldog," which was originally left out of the movie," all sound great in the more spacious and multi-dimensional ambience of DTS for those who have Dolby Digital 5.1* home theater audio.

Yellow Submarine would be a great introduction for children to the wonder of this timeless music, and a lot better than having them sit and watch endless, insipid Barney videos.
