8. Classroom 15: How the Hoover FBI Censored the Dreams of Innocent Oregon Fourth Graders

This book is an eye-opening look at how the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover’s leadership censored the dreams of innocent Oregon fourth graders in the 1950s. Written by professor and author Robert Rabe, it is both a fascinating read and a cautionary tale of what happens when the government takes away free expression. Rabe takes us through the story of how the Hoover FBI targeted the students of Oregon’s Malheur County grade schools, and how the students’ dreams were suppressed by the government. Through interviews with those involved, Rabe reveals how the FBI’s tactics denied the students their right to express their beliefs and opinions. The book is well-researched and includes an in-depth look at the history of the case and its aftermath. It is ultimately a powerful reminder of the impact the government can have when it limits our freedoms.
